Cupping is an ancient therapy that is integral to Chinese Medicine, and use of cupping has also been traced back to Ancient Egyptian times. In short, cupping uses localised suction, created by heat or small pumps, by placing glass or plastic 'cups' on the surface of the skin. These can be left in one place or slid across an area ('moving cupping', which feels wonderful :-) ). This restores the flow of blood and energy to areas that are stiff or in pain, moving local stagnation. Olympians and fitness enthusiasts use it for fatigued muscles, to ensure they are functioning with maximum blood and energy flow to the tissues in the fatigued areas, enabling them to maintain peak performance. For non-Olympians :-) it is effective for pain and stiffness in most parts of the body, from general pain to specific conditions such as arthritis.
But it's not just for aches and pains - as cupping addresses underlying imbalances, it can also be used for conditions such as asthma, colds, flu, insomnia, etc.
The distinctive marks are not bruises, they are caused by stagnant blood being drawn to the surface. The marks only last around 2-4 days. When done by a Traditional Acupuncturist, cupping is completely painless and can feel very warm and soothing.
